Congress must invest in AmeriCorps and our students

Last year, 100% of principals at the schools we collaborate with reported a schoolwide progress, and 85% of 成人快播 students met or exceeded their end-of-year literacy growth goal.”

We face a student literacy crisis in North Texas.听According to the听听, only 18% of our state’s economically disadvantaged fourth graders were proficient readers for their grade level.听To respond to this need, AmeriCorps members have joined 成人快播, providing daily tutoring to children from under-resourced communities in our region.听That’s why our lawmakers should invest in AmeriCorps instead of cutting its funding.

We collaborate with听20 local schools听to implement one-on-one tutoring programs that enable many students to meet and, in many cases, exceed their literacy goals.听But we can’t do it without the help of AmeriCorps.听Last year alone, 17,000 AmeriCorps members worked with local community service programs in Texas, such as 成人快播.听In addition to benefiting our state, it is also an effective use of our tax dollars.听As a public-private partnership, every federal dollar invested in AmeriCorps returns $17 in community benefits.

However, after thirty years of providing this important national service across the country, the House of Representatives proposed cutting a significant amount from AmeriCorps’ budget and eliminating more than 61,000 service positions within the agency.听This would be a serious mistake.听Dismantling AmeriCorps would mean that many students in our community would receive inadequate support in reading.听The effects of these cuts would also ripple across the country, as AmeriCorps members also help in natural disaster recovery, care for seniors, and serve as mentors to children.

The progress students make with 成人快播 tutoring is amazing.听Samantha Melanson, who tutors students at Alice Contreras Elementary School in Fort Worth, said, “When my student completed the reading fluency activity for the first time, he felt intimidated and wanted to get out of it as quickly as possible. Now , weeks later, my student is excited to show me how well he can read the story.”听Another member, Valerie Mitchell, shared, “When I started, the student could barely read. Within a week, there was a 180 degree turn. Since then he has made progress; her teacher has noticed the improvement.”听Our students not only improve their reading skills, but they also experience personal growth.听Kathy O’Toole said her mentoring helped a quiet Mount Auburn Elementary School student open up and allowed her personality to come out.

Any budget cuts to AmeriCorps would destroy our ability to help these students.听In fact, if the House cuts pass, we would lose many of our AmeriCorps members in the coming years, hindering students’ ability to progress.

With support from AmeriCorps, 成人快播 is successful: about 83% of students improved their social-emotional learning skills by the end of the school year.听Last year, 100% of principals at the schools we partner with reported school-wide progress, and 85% of 成人快播 students met or exceeded their end-of-year literacy growth goal.

Without AmeriCorps members, many of these children would not receive the help they need.听Remember, if our children can’t read, they won’t learn;听and if they don’t learn, then they won’t have the same opportunities that are afforded to many others who do.

I urge Congresswoman Kay Granger, who represents our communities and chairs the House Appropriations Committee, to reject cutting funding to AmeriCorps.听Instead, Congress should invest in the agency’s work, which is so important, as proposed by a bipartisan group of senators, including Texas Sen. John Cornyn.听I also thank our state’s other members of Congress, Republicans and Democrats, who have championed AmeriCorps.听The evidence is clear: our schools and many other communities need AmeriCorps.
