Putting Their Hands Up for Reading

Students at聽Public School 188聽in Manhattan had a chance to talk with Schools Chancellor聽Dennis M. Walcott聽when he paid a visit to the Lower East Side elementary school Wednesday to stress the importance of reading.

Mr. Walcott was also at the school to introduce聽成人快播, a nonprofit volunteer tutoring program intended to improve literacy levels in elementary school students who are six months to two years behind in reading. The program operates in California and Washington, and it is now coming to聽seven New York City schools.
